Waldo & Jewett was a partnership between two portrait painters, Samuel Lovett Waldo (1783-1861) and William Jewett (1789/90-1874). Although their business was situated in New York City, both men had strong Connecticut connections. Waldo was born in Windham and worked in Hartford and Litchfield before moving to Charleston, South Carolina and ultimately New York. Jewett was born in East Haddam and was apprenticed to a coachmaker before moving to New York to study with Waldo.
