BiographyWilliam Notman was born in Scotland in 1826 and moved to Montreal in 1856, where he opened a photography studio. He was the first Canadian photographer with an international reputation, with branches of his business elsewhere in Canada and in the United States. When he died suddenly of pneumonia in 1891, the business was continued by his son.
