BiographyJuan Tizol was born on January 22, 1900 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. While his first instrument was the violin, he made his career as a valve trombonist. Juan primarily received his musical training from his uncle Manuel Tizol, who was the director of the municipal band and symphony in San Juan. In 1920, Juan came to the United States when he joined a band that worked in Washington, D.C. The group established residence at the Howard Theater, where it played for touring shows and silent films. The group was hired to play in small jazz or dance groups. This is where Tizol first met Duke Ellington and joined his band in 1929. Tizol left Ellington's band in 1944 to play in the Harry James Orchestra. In 1951, he returned to Ellington but he returned to James's band in 1953 and stayed there for the remainder of his carrer. He died of a heart attack at the age of 84 on April 23, 1984, in Inglewood, California.
