Robert Lee Steele
Robert Lee Steele, of Wethersfield, husband to Shirley (Hanson) Steele, died Friday, (December 6, 2002). Born Kansas City, MO July 13, 1911. Moved to Hartford 1936. Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Robert H. and wife Betsy of Essex, Paul A. and wife Carol of Concord, MA, Philip L. of Hartford, Steven M. of Wethersfield; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Retired vice-president WTIC Radio, announcer, morning personality and sports director. Member National Radio Hall of Fame, Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame, four times named Connecticut Sportscaster of the Year, recipient of Marconi Award for top radio ratings, received Pierpont Edwards Award for distinguished Masonic service, 33 degree Mason, 50-year Shriner, Honorary doctorate (Doctor of Humane Letters) University of Hartford. A wordsmith, he was instrumental in establishing the Bob Steele Literacy Volunteers Reading Center in Hartford, and authored "The Word for the Day: 65 Years of Wit & Wisdom on Mispronunciation" this fall. The funeral will be private. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Bob Steele Reading Center of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (payable to "LVGH"), 30 Arbor St, Hartford, CT 06106; or a charity of the donor's choice in Bob's name.
