Lottie K. Sherman of Steele Rd., West Hartford, widow of Attorney George Sherman, died Friday, (September 13, 2002). Born in Vilna, Poland she came to this country as a child and attended public schools in Hartford. She graduated from Weaver High School in 1931. She devoted most of her spare time to doing volunteer work in the community and was involved with the Democratic Party. In 1951 she and her late husband were founding members of The Hartford Association for Retarded Citizens (HARC) and served on its Board of Directors. They were also founding members of the Mansfield State Training School Foundation where they also served on the Board of Directors. In 1975 Governor Ella Grasso appointed her a Trustee of the Mansfield State Training School and she served until its closing in 1993. She also served on the Governor’s Council of Mental Retardation. She was a life member of the Hebrew Home and Hospital Auxiliary where the Auxiliary recognized her for her length of service by naming her an honorary life board member. Mrs. Sherman is a past Matron of the Golden Chain, past President of the West Hartford Chapter of the American Medical Center at Denver and past Vice President of the National Council of Auxiliaries, as well as a Life Member. She was also a member of the Emanuel Synagogue and its Sisterhood, Hadussah, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, HARC, Jewish Association for Community Living, and Hebrew Academy of Greater Hartford. The Shermans established scholarships at Boston University School of Law, Duke University, the University of Connecticut School of Special Education, and the University of Hartford. They also established endowments at the Hartford Jewish Federation Endowment Foundation, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Hartford Association for Retarded Citizens, and Catholic Family Services; the income to benefit handicapped children and programs for needy children in the community. She is survived by three children, Dr. William Sherman of West Hartford, Richard Sherman and his wife, Joan of Alexandria, VA, and Susan Sherman of Newington. The funeral will be Tuesday, September 17 at 11 a.m. at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford. Burial will follow at Emmanuel Cemetery, Wethersfield. The family will receive friends at the home of Dr. William Sherman, 14 Old Brook Rd., West Hartford following the funeral services and from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
