E. Clayton Gengras

E. Clayton Gengras was born on 21 August 1908 in West Hartford, Connecticut. He dropped out of high school in 1923 to become a Stutz Bearcat salesman. He was the unsuccessful candidate for Connecticut governor in 1966, losing to John N. Dempsey. He was one of Connecticut's richest residents when he was alive. He was the largest shareholder of Hartford National Bank. Gengras was chairman and president of Security Insurance Corporation. He had a large number of automobile dealerships and was one of the largest car dealers in New England. During World War II, Gengras acquired Dauntless Shipyard in Essex and founded the Clayton Manufacturing Compay and sold both businesses in 1945. He then bought the Fire & Casualty Insurance Company of Connecticut. He died on 25 June 1983 in Hartford, Connecticut.
