Fred R. Zeller (1899-1978), a Stonington, Connecticut resident, was the unsuccessful Republican Connecticut gubernatorial nominee in 1958, losing to Abraham Ribicoff. In 1936, Zeller was elected to the Connecticut State Senate from the 20th District. Zeller served five terms as Connecticut State Comptroller from 1939-1958. In 1966, he served a nine-month state prison sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of embezzling from the First Baptist Church of Stonington.
