George J. Conkling

George Joseph Conkling was born on 27 July 1905 in Troy, New York. In 1938, he began working at the Connecticut Department of Public Works. In 1951, he was named deputy finance commissioner, and then named the finance commissioner in 1957, with reappointments in 1959 and 1963. In 1969, Conkling became Connecticut's first transportation commissioner, a post he held until 1971. In 1974, he served as acting finance commissioner. He died on 22 July 1991 in North Haven, Connecticut.
