John Beattie was born on 4 October 1821 in Midlothian, Scotland. He was the son of John Beattie (1789-1836) and Ann Richardson Beattie (1791-1866). He had four siblings: George Beattie (1827-1900), William Beattie (1829-1915), David Beattie (1831-1864), and Christine Beattie (1833-1857).

In 1839, John Beattie married Ann Kelley Beattie (1815-1860). They had one child, Francis Beattie (1845-1919). In 1863, John Beattie married Mary Harrington (1845-1913). They had two children, David Henry Beattie (1865-1933) and Charles J. Beattie (1870-1940). In 1871, John Beattie married his third wife, Mary Gay (1844-1928). They had one child, Peter Beattie (1872-1940).

John Beattie owned quarries in Fall River, Massachusetts and Niantic, Connecticut. He also owned the John Beattie Granite Quarries at Leetes Island in Guilford, Connecticut. The Beattie Quarry provided granite for the abutments of the Statue of Liberty in New York City and the breakwater of the New Haven Harbor.

He died on 18 November 1899 and is buried in Guilford, Connecticut.
