American, died 1910
BiographyEmma Thomson was the first white child born in Dunedin, New Zealand; her family had moved there during the gold rush. She immigrated in 1890 to Hartford, Connecticut to marry James Wyper. James Wyper's family had come from Scotland; he went on to become the Vice President of the Hartfrord Accident and Indemnity and Hartford Fire (now The Hartford Insurance Company.) Emma and James had four daughters: Margaret Hester, who married Raymond H. Dexter; Marian, who married Richard Phillips of Hartford; Jeanne; and Emma, who married James Gage.

Emma Thomson Wyper returned to New Zealand for a visit in 1909-1910. She suffered a head injury during rough seas on the return leg of the trip; that head injury led to her death in 1910.
