William G. Mitchell

BiographyWilliam Mitchell was born on 2 October 1841 in England. He was the son of John Thomas Mitchell (1817-1901) and Sarah (Fisher) Mitchell (1818-1899). He had seven siblings: Ann (Mitchell) King, Martha (Mitchell) Baldwin (d. 1899), Fannie (Mitchell) Davis (d. 1923), Zillah (Mitchell) Clifford (d. 1939), Hattie (Mitchell) Smith (d. 1939), Minnie (Maria Mitchell) Pierce (1858-1941), and John Mitchell (d. 1923). The family immigrated from England to New York in 1855.
William enlisted as a private in Company D, 16th Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on 24 August 1862 in Enfield, Connecticut to serve in the Civil War. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862. He was imprisoned on 20 April 1864 in Plymouth, North Carolina. He died from disease on 19 January 1865.
