Susan R. Meredith, born on August 10, 1944, in Troy, New York, grew up in Sheffield, Alabama.

She attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville starting in 1962, majoring in Political Science, where she became involved in the Civil Rights Movement.

After moving to Boston in 1967, she joined the anti-war movement and the second wave of the women's movement.

Meredith enrolled at Northeastern Law School in 1971.

After law school, she worked for the Connecticut Women's Educational and Legal Fund (CWEALF), which was founded around 1973 to combat discrimination, notably credit discrimination. She served as CWEALF's executive and legal director from late 1976 until 1980, overseeing litigation, public education, and lobbying efforts, including a major employment discrimination case against Electric Boat in Groton. Following her work at CWEALF, Meredith transitioned to a career as a private labor arbitrator.
