BiographyDr. Charles P. Shoemaker, Jr. was born on 6 July 1937 in Franklin, New Jersey. He was the son of Charles P. Shoemaker, Sr. and Alice Haight Shoemaker. He graduated from Amherst College in 1959. He graduated from Albany Medical College and did his residency in general medicine at The Yale-New Haven Medical Center.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1969 under the Berry Plan, which was a Vietnam War-era program that allowed physicians to defer obligatory military service until they had completed medical school and residency training. He served for one year at the Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island, then in the Vietnam War aboard the U.S. Navy hospital ship USS Sanctuary. He was discharged from the Navy in 1971.

He then worked at The Aquidneck Medical Associates until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his career, he served on the staff of the Newport Hospital, where he served on various committeess and as Chief of Surgery and President of the Medical Staff.

He was an Amherst College classmate of and served with Dr. Robert Abbe on the USS Sanctuary.

Dr. Shoemaker died on 4 June 2024 in Newport, Rhode Island.
