The Starter Company’s founder, David Beckerman, grew up in New Haven and attended Hillhouse High School and the University of New Haven. He started the company in 1971, but his genius was entering into licensing agreements with major league sports teams. The company’s first retail product was a line of jackets emblazoned with the insignias of Major League Baseball teams. Soon the company expanded its licensed apparel line to include headgear, activewear, and accessories, launching Starter from a local sports apparel shop to a national household name.
