Sarah Griffin was born in Bedford City, Virginia on 4 March 1884. She was the daughter of Samuel Griffin (1840-1917) and Ann Roy Hutter Griffin (1847-1925). She had six siblings.
She married William Coates Cheney (1864-1941) on 21 May 1908.
She died on 26 April 1968 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
