Courtland Eliphalet Fowler
Courtland Eliphalet Fowler, “Little Hatchet,” was born in 1905 in Norwich Connecticut, the son of Edwin Fowler and Elizabeth Northdruft. He served as chief of the Mohegan tribe from 1970 to 1991. Among his accomplishments were the repair of the Mohegan Church and the addition of the Sunday School in the 1950s. Courtland fought to preserve tribal burial grounds, keeping the Ashbow burial ground from being absorbed by neighboring property owners, and opposing vandalism at Shantok, as well as advocating for its return to the tribe. He was interviewed in 1991 for the oral history component of the permanent exhibit at the American Indian Archaeological Institute, entitled “As We Tell Our Stories: Living Traditions and the Algonkian Peoples of Indian New England.” He died in 1991.
