BiographyJohn “Joli” Gonsalves (1925-1998) of New Bedford, Massachusetts was a musician, singer, composer, arranger, and music producer, and community scholar of music and culture, especially Cape Verdean. In addition to musical and broadcasting activities with many artists he founded the Cape Verdean Cultural Center in New Bedford where there is a street named after him. He was a dedicated educator, traveling to many schools to talk to students about Cape Verdean culture and music.
