William Bush was one of the few identified makers of powder horns who was a black man. He was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts (now Boyleston, MA) to free blacks. He served as clerk in the local militia company from 1747-1757. He is a primary figure in the "Lake George School" of horn carvers. In 1757, he was captured by Indians, and his fate is unknown.
