Albert Newsam

BiographyAlbert Newsam, a deaf-mute, was born at Steubenville, Ohio, on 20 May 1809. In 1820 he was taken to Philadelphia and enrolled in the Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, where his talent for drawing was encouraged. He was apprenticed to Cephas Childs and learned lithography from P.S. Duval, then employed by Childs. He worked as a lithographer until 1859 when he began to go blind and suffered a stroke. He died 20 November 1864 near Wilmington, Delaware.
