DescriptionRound cylindrical stoneware crock and unrelated stoneware lid.

Crock (a): The crock, or wide-mouthed jar, is cylindrical with a thick rolled rim, with two lug handles, each attached on opposite sides. The exterior is covered in a salt glaze, while the interior is covered in a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type slip glaze. On one side is an impressed mark of, "LEMODE, BROTHER" (?). Below this is a hand-painted cobalt blue curving vine and leaf design. The crock has a salt glaze that changes from light grey to a reddish brown in some areas. Much of the glaze surrounding the mark and around the rim has chipped off. An unknown white substance has adhered to the inside of the crock.

Lid (b): The stoneware lid is covered in an Albany-type glaze, with the exception of the two rims; the lid has two rims, it seems, because it is reversible. One side of the rim is relatively plain, with a raised, unglazed rim. On the opposite side, a raised, circular, unglazed rim dips down and has a disc-shaped handle in the center. Much of this side of the lid is covered with a white substance, the same that is adhered to the inside of the crock. The lid does not fit the crock.
Object number1977.26.4a-b
MarkingsThere is one mark on the side of the crock, below the rim. The mark is difficult to read, but looks like, "LEMODE, BROTHER". The first word is very difficult to read.
