(OVER) / "WAYSIDE CROSS" WAR MEMORIAL TO NEW CANAAN'S HEROES. / This adaptation of the ancient French and English wayside crosses, / has been erected on the green at New Canaan, Ct., in memory of / the men and women who served their country in America's five / great wars, a series of sculptured allegorical panels representing / each of the wars. The shaft is of travertine--the stone used / in building Rome--imported from Italy, 17 feet high, and bears a / dedicatory inscription on the base as follows: / "Dedicated to the Glory of the Almighty God in memory / of New Canaan Men and Women who by their unselfish pat- / riotism have advanced the great American ideals of liberty / and the brotherhood of man" / General O'Ryan of New York was orator at the dedication and Harry / Bates Thayer, Pres. of the A. T & T, was chairman of the memorial / committee. / The cross was designed by Putnam Brindley, W. Frank Purdy, and / Ernest S. Leland, of New Canaan's famous art colony, collaborating / with Frances Adams Kent, the sculptor, and was carved in the Presbrey- / Leland studios. / 11/2/23"
