Description(a) Interview with Janice Lamb. Interviewed by Peter Moran on August 11, 2022 at the Stonington Historical Society. (b) Photograph of Janice Lamb taken at her interview. She was interviewed as part of the Connecticut Historical Society's Community History Project discussing her experience during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

At the time of the interview Janice worked at Stonington High School. She has two adult children. Her son has Spina Bifida and is on the Autism spectrum and her daughter attends West Point Military Academy.

Janice went into detail about how COVID affected her son’s life, since he is disabled. She discusses changes to his schooling, nursing, daily schedule, therapy, and the impact of COVID on his physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Janice also discussed the family’s concern that her son would get COVID and the measures they took to protect him while family members were sick.

Janice shared details of her daughter’s school schedule and experiences as a college student during the pandemic. She also shared details of her mother’s lifestyle while living in a retirement community during COVID.

As an employee at Stonington High School, Janice was initially worried about not being paid during the pandemic if the school shut down. She was an hourly employee and worked as the Career Center and Senior Project Coordinator. Janice shared stories about working with students at polls during the 2020 presidential election, having to arrange interviews between local reporters and high school students about the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021 insurrection, and students’ feeling about mask mandates in schools.

Janice knew a Pfizer employee who was working on the vaccine and received updates about it from her friend. Janice did receive a vaccine and had faith that the people working on the vaccine were “brilliant scientists.” She did contract COVID after receiving the first vaccine.

Janice described the precautions she and her friends took while traveling during the pandemic. She also discussed how she was able to stay physically and socially active with friends and the precautions they took to protect themselves.

Janice discussed the Black Lives Matter movement in Stonington, Connecticut and mentioned a Change.org petition started by students to enact change at Stonington High School.

NotesSubject Note: The Connecticut Historical Society’s Community History Project (CHP) is a public-facing initiative, focused on contemporary collecting, gathering items of the recent past as well as from events happening today. This program developed community historians to identify, document, and preserve their experiences as residents of Connecticut, and to share these experiences during a series of community presentations. The project focused on the impact of Covid-19 on Connecticans, particularly on Black and Brown communities, funeral homes, and on nursing home and elder care populations.
