NotesSubject Note: The Intercambio Deportivo softball tournament has been held in July in New Haven since 1988 as an exchange between New Haven and its unofficial “sister city” of Coama in Puerto Rico, where many New Haven residents come from on the island. The exchange was founded in 1988 by Modesto Espada, a Fair Haven, Connecticut resident, and president of Fair Haven’s Coamo Social Club, to honor his brother Luis, a police officer from Coamo, Puerto Rico who was killed there in a motorcycle accident. The exchange brings New Haven officers and their family and friends to Puerto Rico in odd-numbered years, and the Puerto Rican contingent to New Haven in the even-numbered.CCHAP documented some scenes from this game as part of research into Connecticut Puerto Ricans and their activities and heritage.
