NotesSubject Note: First held in 2009, the Rumba Festival of New England celebrates this Latin dance form with performers and a rumba competition. The festival takes place on the grounds of the Church of the Good Shepherd on Wyllys Street in Hartford. Long-time sponsors include the Zayas Law Firm, Super Sabado 91.3 FM, Friends of Pope Park, Inc., and Evelyn Preston Memorial Trust Fund. Performers have included renowned musicians Ray Gonzalez (beloved Hartford trumpet player and orquesta leader) and New York conga player Eddie Montalvo, among many others. Rumba in this context includes Cuban-style percussion and dance rhythms, other Latin versions of this style, and urban Latin dance music generally with a similar beat. In Hartford rumba has a Puerto Rican flavor. Additional materials existin the CCHAP archive for this event. See 2015.196.72.20 for an event flyer.
