DescriptionTwo studio photographs of an African American woman wearing a long-sleeved sweater decorated with beads. She has a ring on her left hand. The photographs were apparently taken by or for her theatrical agent for publicity purposes.

MarkingsEach photograph has a printed gummed label affixed at lower right: "dba / (212) 867-1070 / don buchwald & associates, inc. / 10 east 44 street, new york, n.y. 10017". Don Buchwald & Associates were Carmen De Lavallade's agents.InscribedEach photograph bears the subject's name printed at lower left: "CARMEN DE LAVALLADE".
On verso: 2002.102.8 is inscribed (possibly signed) in red ink "Carmen De Lavallade"; 2002.102.9 is inscribed in pencil "Carmen De Lavallade"; each photograph is inscribed with its accession number in pencil, lower right.
NotesSubject Note: Carmen de Lavallade (b. 1931) was one of the first African-American women to perform with the Metropolitan Opera and Metropolitan Ballet. In 1963, she toured East Asia with the DeLavallade-Ailey Dance Company. She was subsequently a professor at the Yale School of Drama and an actress with the Yale Repertory Company.
