DescriptionRound, buff-colored stoneware jug with a salt glaze on the exterior, and a dark brown glaze, or Albany-type slip glaze, on the interior. The jug has a flat base with cylindrical sides that taper gradually to form a fairly narrow rim. A thick pulled strap handle connects the rim with the shoulder of the jug. Opposite the handle, just below the rim, is the number "2" then the faintly impressed mark, "[SEYMO]UR & BO[SWORTH] / HAR[TFOR]D, CONN." A small amount of cobalt blue has been applied to the mark and top of the handle. Below the mark, on the cylindrical sides of the jug, is a large, hand-painted cobalt blue design. "Conn." and "HARTFORD" are written inside a curving banner. A bird sits in the curve over the banner, with leaves and scrolls to the left and the right. Below the banner, additional scrolls and leaves compliment the curving shape of the design. There are many imperfections in the glaze on the jug, including a spot below the banner where the glaze pooled then barely covered the stoneware. There is crazing over all the exterior surfaces of the jug. A rectangular area on the top of the handle is brown and does not appear to be glazed. This could have happened at the time of manufacture or could be a later condition problem.

MarkingsThere is one faintly impressed mark on the outside of the jug, opposite the handle, near the neck, "UR & BO / HAR ... D, CONN."
