Recto of envelope, typed in black ink: "GRAND ARMY BADGE/ OF CAPTURED CANNON METAL./ DESIGN PATENTED./ This Badge is not to be discolored by any artificial means/ or changed in any manner. After a few weeks' wear it will/ assume the proper bronze shade./ The Star with swivel for the wider official ribbon will be/ furnished on requisition./ The ribbon on official badges, as well as for past officers,/ must conform to that prescribed on page 33, R. and R./ J. M. VANDERSLICE,/ Adjutant-General."
