DescriptionMarking sampler worked in rust, dark blue, and medium brown silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches over two threads. The sampler is rectangular, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with four rows of three alphabets and the numbers 1 through 7, over an inscription. The inscription is "Catharine G C[oombs]". A horizontal meandering line separates the two alphabets. There is a four-sided narrow border, which is not complete at the bottom border.

The sampler has a 2/8-inch double-turned hem on the top and bottom edges, and selvedges on both sides. The sampler is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There are three alphabets plus one additional individual letter, and the numbers 1-7. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1, lowercase block in alphabet 2, and uppercase script in alphabet 3. The letter J is present in the first and second alphabets; the letter U is present in all alphabets. The additional letter is uppercase script W. The third alphabet is missing letters GHIJKLMNOPQR. There are visible pencil marks on the ground where the maker was to work her last name.

Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitches over two threads.

Condition: The sampler has at least one large stain (at E in first alphabet). The sampler has minimal fading. The sampler is not framed.
