DescriptionMan's mid-eighteenth-century (a) frock coat and (b) matching waistcoat. The items were likely imported from England or France and are believed to have been used in the vicinity of Wilton, Connecticut.

(a) Green silk brocade frock coat with a pink, cream, and green floral motif around the neckline, along the front opening, and at the cuffs and pocket areas. The coat is cut with a gentle sloped-away front and a narrow, ventless back with curving side seams. The coat is fasted at center front using ferrous metal hook-and-eyes, there are nine silk covered bone or wood non-functioning buttons to create the look of a buttoned coat. The skirts are pleated at the proper right and left sides to create fullness, the pleats are tacked in a couple of areas so that they do not open, a silk-covered button is stitched to the top of each pleat. The skirt is slit at the center back. The sleeves are fitted and cut with a curve by means of an upper and lower seam, ending in a wide, turned-up cuff decorated with three silk covered buttons. The coat has two large slash pockets over the hips, covered by a wide flap and decorated with non-functioning buttons. The coat is lined with linen and cream-colored satin silk, the lining has started to shatter along the shoulder area and hems.

(b) Green silk brocade waistcoat with a pink, cream, and green floral motif around the neckline, and along the front opening and hems. Front closure of fourteen buttons with corresponding hand-stitched buttonholes. The coat has two large slash pockets over the hips, covered by a wide flap and decorated with non-functioning buttons. The coat is lined with linen and cream-colored satin silk.
