DescriptionHalf-length portrait of a young girl with dark hair wearing a dark dress with a lace collar.

Oval mat has an ornate pattern of scrolls and leaves. The pad has a pattern of leaves surrounding a peacock. The case two birds on either side of a fountain surmounting a basket of flowers surrounded by a cartouche with a border of leaves and flowers. The same design appears on both upper and lower covers.

She was the youngest daughter of William James Hamersley, the sister of Elizabeth, Ogden, and William Hamersley. According to a note accompanying the daguerreotype, the portrait was taken while she a pupil at the "Farmington School," possibly Miss Porter's School. (Ruocco 03/10/12)
