DescriptionRound, porcelain teacup (.a) and saucer (.b) with gilding and thick overglaze enamels in yellow, red, blue, and turquoise. Both have gilded undulating rims and a border of fan-like shapes that separate the sides of the saucer and teacup into four panels. Each depression in the rim leads to a panel of geometric shapes and scrolls that swirl to the right and down to the blue-enamelled center of the saucer or the bottom of the teacup. The swirling shapes, embelishments, and colors reflect Orientalism, an interest in Islamic cultures that emerged in the late nineteenth century.
Object number1938.24.68a-b
MarkingsAn underglaze brown, printed maker's mark on the bottom of both the teacup and saucer consists of a crown over the seal "DOULTON/ BURSLEM" and then "ENGLAND". T

There is a hand-painted series of numbers and letters found in brown on the saucer, "cb370/ HB20bb/ x" (the 'x' has a small dot to either side).

A second hand-painted series of numbers and letters in blue is found on the teacup, "cb370/ HB20bb 2".
