DescriptionWoman's bonnet of cream-colored silk, colored by the blue silk lining beneath. The brim is approximately seven inches wide at the center top. It is shaped and supported by seven insertions of cardboard strips, 1/2 inch wide. A double row of cardboard at the outer edge, and another along the seam with the crown, are separated by three single strips, spaced 3/4 inch apart. The fabric of the brim is gathered over the cardboard strips. The ends of the brim are pointed, falling below the line of the back of the neck. The crown is made of a very finely striped silk. It is gathered at the top and bottom and stitched to the brim with the fabric of the brim folded under, then stitched on top. This forms a narrow gathered flounce along the seam, which also has an insertion of wire for shape and support. The bottom of the bonnet is bound by a strip of cream-colored silk lined with the blue, gathered along the top, and attached across the back of the neck and to the bottom pointed corners of the brim. The crown is lined with cream-colored cotton. The ribbon that forms the ties is a continuous piece extending approximately 34 inches from the edge of each brim point; it is carried around the bottom of the bonnet, folded, and stitched into place. This silk ribbon, 2 3/4 inches wide, is a combination of complex weaves with satin stripes and brocade flowers in the designs.
