DescriptionRectangular tortoiseshell box (.a). The top of the shallow lid is ornamented with inlaid blue, pink, and purple metal flowers on a green metal stem. The box has a shallow lid that is joined to the back of the box by a hinge at the rim. The front edge of the box is decorated with silver decoration, consisting of a projecting shell flanked by curved leaves. Each corner of the box lid is reinforced with a small silver bracket. The right side of the box lid has broken off; it has been repaired with a metal bracket nailed in place at the edge of the lid. The underside of the box is lightly scratched.

Rectangular red leather case (.b). Embossed on the top of the case is, "WM. F. J. BOARDMAN/ HARTFORD CONN./ CAPT. ELIZUR GOODRICHS,/ SNUFF BOX./ 1730 1785." The interior of the box lid is lined with silk and embossed in gold with, "E. SCHALL/ HARTFORD, Ct." The lower portion of the case is lined with velvet. The case is held together with a hinge at the back and a metal clasp at the front. The top and sides of the leather case are lightly scratched and worn.
