DescriptionSampler worked in red brick, dark green, medium green, light brown, light blue, tan, green-gray, and cream silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches. The sampler is rectangular, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with four rows of two alphabets, over an inscription. The inscription is "Tryphena Fitchs/ Sampler Made at 13/ Years of age 1801". Certain lines of alphabets and text are separated by various borders, including straight and meandering lines. The sampler has a four-sided strawberry and vine border.
The sampler has a 1/8 inch double-turned hem on the top, bottom and right edges. The selvedge is on the left edge. The sampler is not framed.
Letters and Numbers: There are two alphabets. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1 and lowercase block in alphabet 2. The letter J is present in the lowercase alphabet only; the letter U is present in both alphabets. S and T are repeated in the uppercase alphabet.
Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitch over two threads.
Condition: The sampler has light to moderate fading. The sampler is not framed.
