DescriptionHalf-length portrait of Lucy Ruggles Howe attributed to Philip Hewins. She is depicted as a young woman facing slightly right, wearing an off-the-shoulder blue dress with full sleeves. The top of the dress is edged with white lace. Her dark hair is arranged on the top of her head, with portions pulled forward to frame her face. She is wearing a long black necklace.

InscribedA label affixed to the top of the back of the frame reads, "This Portrait of Miss Lucy Ruggles Howe/ Daughter of Lewis Howe of Hardwick and step daughter/ of the Hon. John M. Niles of Hartford Aged 21 Years/ was painted by Hewin of Hartford 1835."
