DescriptionGrey, ovoid, salt-glazed stoneware jug with a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jug has a rolled rim, reeded neck, ovoid shoulders and body, and a flat bottom. A pulled strap handle connects the neck and shoulder of the jug. Opposite the handle is an impressed mark, "P.CROSS/ HARTFORD". Below this is an incised floral decoration consisting of a small central circle with four evenly spaced petals surrounding. The petals are hand-painted with cobalt blue. Hand-painted cobalt blue also decorates both ends of the handles. The jug leans slightly, toward the side with the handle. There are several imperfections in the surface of the jug, probably the result of the firing process. The most prominent interruption in the glaze is located just below the incised decoration. There is crazing over all the glazed surfaces of the jug and a chip on the side to the lower left of the mark. There is also a chip in the edge of the bottom of the jug.
