DescriptionPair of buff-colored stoneware candlesticks with a mottled light brown, dark brown, black, and green glaze, a type of ceramic made by the Wannopee Pottery Company called "Duchess ware". Each of the candlesticks has a square, attached bobeche, or drip catcher, with upturned corners and a short cylindrical well to hold the candle. Below the bobeche, the cast candlesticks look like twisted ceramic that gradually widens near the bottom. Toward the lower half of each candlestick is a molded and applied handle that also takes on the appearance of twisted ceramic. Each candlestick is supported by a widely flared, round base. The interior of each candlestick is hollow and coated with a buff-colored glaze. The glaze on the exterior of candlestick .a is darker than the glaze on candlestick .b. The remnants of wax are adhered to the inside of the bobeche and well, as well as one small area at the base of candlestick .a. There are light scratches and worn areas on the bottom of each candlestick, consistent with use over time.
