Strong I (1819-1907) was one of the oldest members of the First Company, Connecticut Governor's Foot Guard, which he joined at the opening of the Civil War in 1861. He was the Treasurer of the Foot Guard for over forty years, and he was also Paymaster. He was elected City Treasurer of Hartford in 1880; he remained in the post until his retirement in 1904, at age 85.
