DescriptionRound dish of buff-colored earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The center of the dish is decorated with a transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue pattern. The pattern shows a tower and low wall in a state of ruin to the left. The tower has grass growing from the top, and there are trees behind the wall. To the right of the tower, two figures are fishing along a stream or river that winds through the scene. To the right, two tall trees sit on land that sticks out into the river. A wall, village, and low hills are visible in the distance. The circular pattern is surrounded by a wide rim that is decorated with a underglaze cobalt blue border. The border consists of about three repeats of the same pattern printed around the rim. There are three chips in the rim, and a fourth spot where the ceramic chipped but was reattached to the rim. The dish is covered with light scratches and crazing. A long streak of an unknown yellow substance has adhered to the underside of the rim. Finally, there is a spot of a sticky substance on the bottom of the dish, probably the remains of a sticky label.
Object number2004.82.0
MarkingsThere is an impressed number "2" on the bottom of the dish, as well as a circular paper label with a scalloped edge. "N/ 850" is hand-written in pencil on the paper label.
