DescriptionOval pitcher made of buff-colored stoneware with a translucent brown glaze, a type of ceramic known as Rockingham ware. The pitcher has an oval base, and sides that swell suddenly then taper gently to form a plain rim. At one end of the oval, the rim curves forward to form a spout. On the opposite side of the pitcher, a molded and applied handle connects the rim with the widest portion of the pitcher. The same raised decoration is found on both sides of the pitcher. It consists of the profile of a bearded figure, facing left, surrounded by concentric borders of raised ceramic and a scalloped line. This is further surrounded by four lobes of abstract design, each design consisting of the same symmetrical curved, scroll designs. There is one small chip at the tip of the handle of the pitcher. A small chip in the rim to the left of the handle leads to a short crack about half-way through the stoneware.
Object number1979.62.83
MarkingsThere is an impressed letter on the bottom of the pitcher, most likely a "P".NotesTechnique Note: The majority of the raised decoration on the sides of the pitcher was probably formed as part of the mold. However, the two small profiles were most likely applied by sprigg-molding. One of the faces is tilted up to the left, and the other is much more even, suggesting that they were applied by hand before glazing, but were not part of the mold. (Hunt 1/11/2005)
