DescriptionSmall, lidded porcelain bowl with a transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue decoration and gilding. The bowl (.a) and lid (.b) are decorated with the same pattern, consisting of a blue background with darker blue lines creating irregular geometric shapes. Areas of white, in the shape of large and small flowers, interrupt the blue at regular, but naturalistic, intervals. This pattern is known as cracked ice, or the Hawthorne design, as the dark blue background is meant to imitate the appearance of cracked ice on a river.

Bowl (.a): The bowl has a round foot and straight sides that extend out to a wider rim. The rim is gilded.

Lid (.b): The lid has a slightly domed top and a small, round finial in the center. The handle and rim are gilded.
Object number1945.1.1497a-b
MarkingsThere is an unreadable, underglaze green, printed maker's mark of commendation on the bottom of the bowl. It is too small and too fuzzy to read. This same mark may have been printed on the inside of the lid as well, although only green dots are visible at the present.NotesUse Note: This lidded bowl could have been a sugar bowl or part of a dresser set.
