DescriptionRound, white, ironstone plate with a red underglaze transfer-printed border and pattern, titled, "Spanish Festivities 1798". The pattern, found in the middle of the plate, shows three women riding in a carriage with two very large wheels. The carriage is pulled by a black horse that is ridden by a black or native individual (he could be a Spaniard or a native South American) in a top hat and livery. In the foreground, a man is preparing to mount a white horse, and two dogs, possibly greyhounds, are standing or sitting in the street. The carriage is passing in front of a white marble statue in the Greco-Roman style, showing a seated individual with a shield. Palm trees complete the background scene. This pattern is surrounded by a border showing a light red background superimposed with four groups of two white flowers separated by four round cartouches with flowers inside.

The plate has one deep scratch over the printed carriage and some light crazing, especially on the bottom of the plate.

MarkingsThere are two marks on the bottom of the plate. The first is an overglaze, transfer-printed red enamel pattern name. The mark consists of the words, "SPANISH/ FESTIVITIES/ 1798" in an oval cartouche surrounded by elaborate scrolls and leaves. Below this is the faintly printed word "ENGLAND". The second mark consists of deeply impressed and intertwined letters "J" and "G" over a crescent shape with the name "& SONS" inside. Above this mark is the letter "Z", and to the right, the number "9".
