DescriptionRound, earthenware bowl with transfer-printed underglaze blue decoration in the willow pattern; the bowl is a type of ceramic known as willowware. The bowl is decorated with Doulton & Co Ltd's traditional blue willow pattern, consisting of a central Chinese landscape with a willow tree with Chinese structure to the right. There is a fence in the foreground, and a bridge crossing a river to the left. A junk floats on the river, and there are further hills and structures in the distance. Two birds are flying through the air. The larger plain white areas of the willow pattern have been decorated with a dusting of overglaze gilding. The central landscape is surrounded by a series of concentric borders. The first is a border of small diamonds creating abstract geometric patterns. The second border is a field of white that has been covered with a dusting of overglaze gilding. This is surrounded by a different border that combines small diamonds and abstract geometric and floral motifs, and is surrounded by a line of gilding, a field of dark blue, and a final line of gilding at the rim. The outside of the bowl is decorated with a variation of the willow pattern showing Chinese structures, bridges, and trees. As on the inside of the bowl, the larger plain white areas have been decorated with a dusting of overglaze gilding. The willow pattern on the outside is surrounded at the foot and the rim by a line of gilding, a field of dark blue, and another line of gilding.
