DescriptionSmall, wheel-thrown Chinese export porcelain plate with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration showing a Chinese landscape; the plate is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The central Chinese landscape consists of a willow tree with a Chinese structure to the right. A river runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and mountains, houses, and hills in the background. The central landscape is surrounded by concentric borders. First is a plain band of blue followed by a field of white, undecorated porcelain. The white field is surrounded by a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside, and then another band of plain blue. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots in the surface of the plate.
