DescriptionWheel-thrown Chinese export porcelain pitcher with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration showing a Chinese landscape; the pitcher is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The Chinese landscape shows a willow tree and Chinese structure to the right. Various boats float on the river that runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and mountains, trees, and houses in the distance. The landscape covers the wide, round bottom half of the pitcher, which then tapers to a smaller, round neck with a pouring spout at the rim. Where the pitcher begins to taper from the wide base to the narrower neck, there is a blue border with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. Stylized tobacco leaves run from this blue border up the neck of the pitcher. After an area of white porcelain visible on the neck is the "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside, followed by another blue border that has darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. The body of the pitcher has a slight yellow discoloration.
