DescriptionChinese export porcelain dish, a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The dish is shaped like a leaf with a semi-circular stem and a flared rim with an undulating edge. The dish is hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a landscape. The landscape shows a Chinese structure in the center, with a bridge over a river in the foreground. The river meanders through the landscape, which shows islands, trees, and houses in the distance. The landscape is surrounded by a blue band, then an area of white before a series of borders at the flared rim. These borders begin with a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside. The "Canton" border is surrounded by a band of gilding, then a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond and star pattern inside. The outer edge of the rim is gilded. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots on the surface of the dish. The gilding is worn at the outer edges of the dish.
