DescriptionOak and pine table with drawer in the seventeenth century style. The top has a wide overhang, and semi-circular gouge carving at the upper edge of the sides of the top. There is one full-width drawer on the front of the table. The side rails and back of the table are plain, and there is a single rail below the drawer. The legs are straight; straight stretchers connect the legs at the ankle, just above the foot. The corners of the legs and feet are canted. Hardware consists of one wood knob on the front of the drawer.

Condition: The top is worn and lightly scratched; it may be replaced. At one time there were tacks applied to the front and side edges of the top. A portion of the drawer front above the knob, and the underside of the top above the knob, have been patched. The back right corner of the drawer has been repaired. There is some wear to the top surface of the front stretcher. The table has been refinished.

Design and Construction Details: The top is formed of a single board (possible replacement). It is joined to the leg posts and sides of the frame with wooden pins and nails. There is no rail above the top drawer. The rail below the drawer, side rails, and back are tenoned and pinned to the full-height leg posts. The drawer runners are joined to the rail in front and tenoned into the back of the frame. The drawer front is flat and the drawer sides are rounded on top. There is an incised, abstract geometric shape on the front of the drawer, to the left of the knob. The front, sides and back of the drawer are joined with dovetails. The drawer bottom fits into grooves in the front and sides of the drawer, and is nailed at the back.
Object number1945.1.1065
InscribedThe interior edge of the right drawer runner has the incised letters and name of "V x Smith".

There is a Latin inscription in ink on the exterior back of the drawer: "Vide super parten finestra inferiorum". The exterior back of the drawer also has large shadowed numbers and letters: "WB1779". The interior back of the drawer has a pencil inscription of the name "William Bronner [?] 779" and a chalk letter "B".

A small white paper label with a red border and canted corners is adhered to the interior bottom of the drawer: "38.16/ Seymour" is hand-written in black ink on the label.
