DescriptionWholecloth quilt constructed of a quilted petticoat that has been altered into a rectangular bed covering. The wholecloth quilt consists of a red calendared twill-woven worsted top, batting, and a plain-woven and twill-woven worsted backing; these layers have been hand-stitched together with yellow worsted thread in an elaborate quilted pattern. The quilted pattern includes two meandering vines across the center flanked by a scalloped border, and a field of diamonds created by groups of three parallel quilted lines.
The wholecloth quilt was constructed of a quilted petticoat that was removed from its waistband, divided into two sections and stitched together with black thread; the hem of the petticoat is now at the center of the quilt. A pocket flap, cut into the side of the petticoat near the waist to allow the wearer to access a hanging pocket, was sewn up. The top is formed of four panels and two additional strips of red calendared worsted at one side. The backing is constructed of two panels of red twill-woven calendared worsted at the center, two wide panels of plain-woven worsted in blue and cream, and two narrower panels of plain-woven worsted with red, blue and cream stripes. Three edges of the quilt are finished front to back; one side of the quilt is edged with black tape.
Condition: Multiple small holes, tears, and worn areas are scattered around the top of the quilt. The glaze is gone from the wool. The red worsted has many holes around the opening for the pocket; some of these holes have been repaired with a red patch on the back of the quilt. The quilt has split in a short horizontal line adjacent to the center seam. The quilt is not rectangular.
