DescriptionCylindrical, rusticated, stoneware planter in the shape of a tree trunk, glazed on the exterior with a translucent dark brown glaze, a type of ceramic known as Rockingham ware. The interior of the planter is not glazed, but the exterior glaze accentuates the decoration. The exterior of the planter has raised decoration imitating a tree, complete with knots in the wood, a climbing, leafy vine, and a background of rough bark. Two short branches cross over each other to form attached handles; the two handles are located on opposite sides of the planter. Two small holes are pierced through the side of the planter, at the bottom, just below each handle. The bottom of the planter is flat. The maker's mark is impressed into the bottom of the inside of the planter, "S,L, PEWTRESS.&CO/ FAIR HAVEN CONN".

There are six chips of various sizes on the rim of the planter, as well as smaller chips on the protruding stumps of branches found on the side of the planter. Two cracks extend from the rim down the side of the planter.
