DescriptionSmall, ovoid, buff-colored stoneware jug in the shape of a footed bellarmine jug. The jug has a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior, while the exterior is left unglazed. The jug sits on a round foot that supports ovoid sides that narrow at the shoulder to form a reeded neck. To one side, an extruded and applied handle connects the neck and shoulder of the jug. Opposite the handle is the sprigg-molded, bearded face of a man. Below this is a round, sprigg-molded medallion. Inside a round band, two snakes flank a vertical post with a crown on top. Two mold lines are clearly visible on the sides of the jug, between the handle and sprigg-molded decoration. There are light scratches on the body of the jug over these mold lines, and three chips in the foot.

MarkingsThere is a maker's mark, "S.L. PEWTRESS/ NEW HAVEN, CONN", impressed in tiny type on the bottom of the jug. Additionally, the jug retains its original McKearin Collection paper label. The square, off-white label is pre-printed with a border and the words, "George S. McKearin/ Collection/ of/ American Pottery/ No." Then the number "A-105" is hand-written in pencil.Subject Terms
